Happy St David’s Day! – Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus!
This addition to the Flosculus (Small Flower) series of photographs is a little bit different to the others. Apart from being the largest flower in the series, it’s the only one so far to use focus stacking to keep all parts of the flower in focus.
Even though it’s a miniature daffodil the flower is larger than the others in the series, the narrow depth of field while taking macro photographs using extension tubes didn’t allow the whole flower to be in focus in a single shot. To be able to have the trumpet and the petal in focus two shots had to be taken. One shot was taken with the petals in focus, then the camera was moved back slightly (on a macro slider) while keeping the same focus point, until the trumpet is in focus and a second shot was taken.
The two shots are then stacked and aligned in Photoshop and the sharpest parts of each shot are kept. The result is an image where all parts of the flower are in focus.
